Making Herbal Infusions and Extracts

Water-Based Herbal Infusions:
The process of brewing tea is very similar to the concept of making an herbal infusion. Bring water almost to boiling and then pour it over your chosen herbs. Typically, 1 cup water is used per 1-2 teaspoons of dried herbs. Let the infusion steep for at least 15 minutes. Cool and strain. Store your infusion in a glass jar, but preserve with high proof alcohol if you intend to keep it for more than 3 days.

Oil-Based Herbal Infusions and Extracts:
Infused Oils, sometimes also known as Oil-Based Extracts or Macerated Oils, consists of a vegetable oil that has been infused with one or more herbs.

To make an oil-based herbal infusion, it is best to use a double boiler or crock pot with a low heat setting. It is crucial that you do not overheat the oil. Add 2 ounces of Sunflower Seed Oil, Olive Oil, or other desired vegetable oil and 1/2 - 2/3 ounce dried herbs (if using fresh herbs, double the amount used) to your double boiler or crock pot and stir well. Use the lowest heat setting. Allow to heat for two hours, stirring every few minutes. Then, carefully strain the oil by using muslin. Straining the oil at least twice is recommended. If botanical material remains in the infused oil, the oil can go rancid.
