Essential Oils & Absolutes

There are many ways in which you can use essential oils, however, to use them effectively, you should understand the properties of the oils, recommended dilutions and the various methods of application. We encourage you to do as much research as possible before using essential oils, as they are very potent medicinal oils. Always pay proper attention to usage rates in your formulations. You should also be familiar with the different carrier oils, their shelf lives and their effects on different skin types. Always keep good notes on blends that you make so that you can replicate something if needed. Your notes should include ingredients and proportions, the date you prepared the blend, comments, and improvements to be made next time. Label finished products with the date the product was made, ingredients and instructions for use.

Because essential oils are highly potent, concentrated substances, you must know how to work with them safely. The potential hazards of an essential oil depend on the compounds in the oil, the dosage and frequency used, and the method of application. Some can cause skin irritations, some can raise or lower blood pressure and some have strong sedative properties. In rare circumstances, some are said to even cause miscarriages. As such, it is important to become familiar with the oils you intend to use. Our high quality, pure, steam distilled essential oils are sourced exclusively from small distilleries around the world. We buy directly from the distilleries to ensure the freshness, quality and purity of the oils. Because we source directly from small distilleries worldwide, many of our essential oils do not have analysis documents. If your purchase requires either a Certificate of Analysis or MSDS, please contact our customer service department prior to ordering to see if the required documentation for your product is currently available.

If you order essential oils that are 16 oz. or lager in size, we may ship them in PET containers to avoid breakage during shipment. Please transfer these oils immediately into glass bottles.

Organic essential oils are obtained from plants that have not been chemically treated, and the soil is usually certified to be chemical free for a certain number of years. Many oils are organic by nature (conifer oils for instance), however, they may not be backed by certification. This does not mean the oil is poor quality. It simply means that the producer did not have the oil certified as organic. The certification process is quite costly. Organic oils, therefore are more expensive than conventional oils. With some oils, using conventional instead of organic oils may not pose any concern. With other oils, however, you may want to make sure the oil is of organic quality, especially when the plant/fruit is known to be heavily sprayed with pesticides. Citrus fruit, for instance, is usually sprayed with pesticides that are readily absorbed into the rind. The rind is the part of citrus fruits that are pressed to obtain the oil. The resulting essential oil can have high concentrations of pesticides if non-organic fruit rinds are used. If you are using citrus essential oils in skin care products, you may want to select organic oils.

CO2 extracted oils are high quality oils extracted using carbon dioxide in liquid form, as the solvent. When carbon dioxide is converted to liquid by using low temperatures and high pressure, it becomes a very safe and effective solvent that allows all the desireable active constituents of a plant to be collected without the risk of heat degradation. Once the extraction is complete, the carbon dioxide is allowed to go back to its natural gaseous state, leaving behind only the extracted essence of the plant. CO2 extracted oils are the closest representation of the natural plant ever achieved.

Two types of oils are obtained using this method of extraction:

CO2 Selects:

Selects are oils which are extracted at lower pressures and contain only the volatile, CO2 soluble components. The heavier waxes, resins, and color compounds are left behind. The viscosity of a select oil is generally thick but pourable. These oils closely resemble steam distilled oils in composition, however, they may contain more volatile components that are not extracted during steam distillation.
CO2 Totals:

Totals are oil that are extracted at higher pressures and contain both the volatile and non-volatile CO2 soluble components of a plant. These oils contain the essential oil of the plant plus the heavier waxes, resins, color compounds, making them very similar to the plant itself. CO2 totals are generally thick and pasty but are soluble in essential oils and vegetable oils (although some may need gentle warming).
