Lemon Balm Hydrosol, sometimes known as Melissa Hydrosol , is produced during the distillation of Melissa Essential Oil. Lemon Balm Hydrosol is often used as an affordable alternative to using the rare and costly Melissa Essential Oil. Lemon Balm Hydrosol has a refreshing, softly floral, lemon-like, herbaceous aroma. Suzanne Catty describes the aroma of Lemon Balm Hydrosol as being lighter and more floral than Melissa Essential Oil, and we agree.
Lemon Balm Hydrosol is suitable for normal skin and is especially effective in applications for oily skin and in helping to combat acne. It offers anti-viral and anti-inflammatory action. Suzanne Catty mentions that it is a good choice for maturing skin, rashes, skin irritations, sunburn, eczema and herpes sores. She also mentions that it is helpful in the treatment of poison oak and poison ivy.
Lemon Balm Hydrosol is calming and can help to balance the emotions. It can be used alone or in combination with other soothing hydrosols to help combat anxiety and stress.
Suzanne Catty mentions that Lemon Balm Hydrosol can ease morning sickness and other discomforts during pregnancy. It is also said that Lemon Balm Hydrosol's anti-inflammatory properties can help ease PMS and menstrual discomfort.
Lemon Balm Hydrosol is safe to use in babycare and childcare formulations. Although we find chamomile and lavender hydrosol to be more calming than lemon balm in babycare applications, blending lemon balm hydrosol with either lavender or chamomile makes a wonderfully synergistic formulation with an uplifting, soft lemony fragrance. Use it alone or in combination with lavender or chamomile hydrosols for sprays for baby's room, baby's bathwater and for use to wipe after diaper changes. Suzanne Catty mentions that it can be helpful in treating cradle cap. It is anti-inflammatory and antibacterial and can be used as a soothing wetting agent for natural baby wipes.
